Scope and Contents
This collection spans the years 1959 to the present. Most of the materials in this collection are described at the box level, with general description of box contents.
Series I: Individual Provosts' Records
Series I contains records specific to individual provosts. Where broad subjects span several provosts' administrations or address certain broad areas (including
surveys, the WPI Plan, Massachusetts Academy), most of these records are in succeeding record groups.
Series II: Annual Reports
This series contains records specific to individual provosts.
• Department and WPI Goals and Strategic Plans
The first two boxes in this grouping focus on Department Goals. The next three are primarily strategic plans for WPI as a whole. Box 6 contains records of the President's Task Forces and Commissions, 2004-2007
• Department Heads' Meeting Minutes and Memos
Series III: Faculty
This group contains faculty handbooks and new faculty orientation materials and other records related to the faculty. Also included is a scrapbook/album with photographs of and information about Humanities Dept. faculty.

Series IV: WPI Cabinet and Committees
Series V: WPI Plan materials
Materials related to the 25th anniversary of the Plan.

Series VI: Academics: First Year Experience
This group of records deals with Academics, including the First Year Experience, Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science, the Interface Discipline Program, NASA's space suit glove competition, and WPI's Graduate Education.
• First Year Experience: Great Problems Seminars Posters
• Academics: Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science (MAMS)
• Academics: Interface Discipline Program
A program at the interface of existing disciplines, this was one of the recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Task Force.
• Academics/Project: WPI Prototype Space Suit Glove - NASA/ASEE Competition
Consists of materials related to WPI's student participation in the NASA/ASEE Design Team Competition in 1985.
• Academics: Graduate Education
Series VII: Programs/Grants/Contracts/Events
This series contains records related to programs (including those funded by the Davis Educational Foundation), contracts and agreements, the proposed merger with Clark for an MBA program, and other materials related to events.
Series VIII: Accreditation
This material relates to accreditation by ABET and other organizations.

Biographical / Historical
This office began in 1959, when M. Lawrence Price was named Vice President and Dean of the Faculty. Prior to that, Professor Francis Roys served as Chairman of the Faculty for eighteen years.
The following people have served to lead this department:

2. Vice President and Dean of Faculty Ray Bolz, 1972-1983.
3. Vice President and Provost/Dean of Faculty Richard H. Gallagher, 1985-1989
4. Acting Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Donald N. Zwiep, 1989-1990
5. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affiars Diran Apelian, 1990-1996
6. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs John F. Carney, 1996-2005
7. Provost Carol Simpson, 2005-2006
8. Provost John Orr, 2007-2010
9. Provost Eric Overstrom, 2010-present
The Division of Academic Affairs, which the Provost leads, is responsible for the overall quality of teaching, scholarship and research at WPI, both on the undergraduate and graduate levels.
