Scope and Contents

This collection includes written materials by and about Francis Roys; research for Alden Roys' Master's thesis and notes for courses taught by Alden Roys; photographs, primarily of family but also photographs of the Class of 1909 and a photograph of Zelotes Coombs and two of President Ralph Earle; and academic robes and mortar board caps.

The collection contains the unpublished manuscript for a history of WPI written by Francis Roys, titled One Hundred Years of Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Biographical / Historical

Francis Roys graduated from WPI in 1909 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He joined the faculty in 1910 and received a Master's Degree in 1917, at which time he became an assistant professor. He became a full professor and head of the Mechanical Engineering Department in 1923. He was named dean of engineering in 1939, and he served twice as acting president of WPI. He also served as dean of students, and became vice president in 1956. He was awarded the honorary degree of doctor of engineering in 1939. He retired in 1960, after a 50 year career at WPI.

Alden Roys graduated from WPI in 1940. He received a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from WPI in 1963. He was an Experimental Engineer and Instrument Specialist , and for many years he was a laboratory instructor at the Alden Hydraulic Laboratory in Holden, MA, during the time the lab was operated by WPI. He was a licensed pilot and a licensed extra class amateur radio operator.
